$300,000 Bodemeister filly sets record at Barretts August sale

The 2017 Barretts Select Yearling sale on Aug. 29 in southern California was led by a $300,000 yearling filly by Bodemeister that was purchased by Jay Em Ess Stable.

The price was the highest ever paid for a yearling at Barretts.

“She’s like a family member,” said Tom Bachman of Fairview Farm, who bred the filly. “She’s been good from the beginning. I don’t keep horses, but if I were ever going to, she’d have been it. I really thank Dave McGlothlin and the Harris Farms crew.”

Harris Farm, as agent for Fairview, consigned hip No. 78. The dark bay or brown filly is out of the stakes-winning Jump Start mare North Freeway, whose dam Shawnee Country won three graded stakes and has produced two stakes horses in addition to North Freeway.

Bachman said he bred North Freeway to Bodemeister because “I like horses who can carry their speed two turns.”

Bodemeister, the sire of this year’s Kentucky Derby (G1) hero Always Dreaming, is the leading Second-Crop Sire of 2017 with more than $3.8 million in progeny earnings to date. His eight stakes horses this year also include Woody Stephens S. (G2) and Laz Barrera S. (G3) winner American Anthem.
