WinStar Farm’s leading 4-year-old colt American Patriot, winner of Keeneland’s Maker's 46 Mile S. (G1) in his last start, has been confirmed for the £600,000 Queen Anne S. (G1) on June 20th at the Royal Ascot meeting, and the son of War Front will travel to England on June 13th.
“American Patriot breezed exceptionally well on Saturday, and came out of the work good. He’s doing really well, so it’s all systems go,” said trainer Todd Pletcher. “It’s an honor to have a horse good enough to compete in one of the biggest races in the world like the Queen Anne, and on a stage like Royal Ascot. We are very much looking forward to it.”
Pletcher also confirmed that top European-based jockey Frankie Dettori will have the mount in the prestigious one-mile turf event. American Patriot breezed a bullet five furlongs around the dogs in 1:00 2/5 over the Belmont turf course in his most recent tune-up on June 3rd.
American Patriot enjoyed a good 3-year-old campaign in North America a year ago, capturing the Kent S. (G3) at Delaware Park and placing in the Secretariat S. (G1) on Arlington Million Day in Chicago. This year as a 4-year-old, the dark bay colt has emerged as one of top milers in the sport, winning a Gulfstream Allowance race in his seasonal debut as a prep for his breakthrough score in the Maker’s 46 Mile (G1).
An earner of $475,050 to date from 5 wins in 11 starts, American Patriot’s plans call for him to return to the U.S. following the Queen Anne to point for a second half of the year campaign that will include the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), a race WinStar won a year ago with Tourist.
By world-class sire War Front, American Patriot is a WinStar homebred that hails from the Tiznow mare Life Well Lived, a full sister to WinStar’s international star Well Armed, whose 14-length win in the 2009 Dubai World Cup (G1) still stands as the largest margin of victory ever recorded in the 22-year history of the race.
