Super Saver exacta in Grade 1 Hopeful S.

Competitive Edge got his first stakes win and I Spent It added to his black-type resume with a 1-2 finish for Super Saver in the $350,000 Hopeful S. (G1) on Labor Day at Saratoga (VIDEO).

Super Saver has emerged as the dominant Freshman Sire of 2014. He now has three stakes winners, two of them graded, and over $900,000 in progeny earnings, all leading numbers in their respective categories.

Competitive Edge broke from the outside in the field of seven, with I Spent It two slots to his inside. Both got away cleanly from the gate and went to the front to duel with Signature Cat, who was intent on getting to the front as well.

The trio was locked together for three furlongs until Signature Cat, along the inside, began to fade. Competitive Edge, furthest off the rail, began to edge clear from I Spent It at the top of the stretch, the bounded clear through the lane, winning by 5 ¾-lengths. I Spent It was a clear-cut second, nine lengths over third-place finisher Sharm.

The final time for the seven furlongs over the “good” track was 1:24.11.

“The thing that’s really cool for us is he’s a son of Super Saver, and he’s our Derby winner,” noted winning trainer Tood Pletcher. “To see him getting off to such a great start at stud, to have a Hopeful winner in his first crop, it’s kind of extra special for us having a son of Super Saver do that.

“I think I Spent It is a very good horse as well, as he showed in the Saratoga Special. I’ve had a close eye on him, being a son of Super Saver also, and it’s kind of cool that Super Savers ran 1-2 in the Hopeful.”|

WinStar Farm bred Competitive Edge in Kentucky out of the multiple stakes-placed Cape Town mare Magdalena’s Chase. He was one of the top sellers at the OBS Florida Sale this past March, bringing a winning bid of $750,000 by agent Alex Solis.

Competitive Edge has now won $259,800 in his two outings for owners Nancy Favreau, Kathy Psoinos, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, and Susan Magnier.

I Spent It, owned by Alex and Joann Lieblong, boosted his earnings to $335,000 with his strong finish. The bay colt won the Saratoga Special (G2) last month.
