Artie Schiller tops 2yo SW sire list

Miss Machiavelli's come-from-behind win in the $100,000 Pike Place Dancer S. at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday gave Artie Schiller his fifth 2-year-old stakes winner of 2013, the most of any North American sire (VIDEO).

Artie Schiller's juveniles have tallied in excess of $1.1 million thus far this year. The WinStar stallion has two of the top contenders in next week's Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (We Miss Artie) and Grade 1 Juvenile Fillies Turf (My Conquestadory).

Ridden by Dennis Carr, Miss Machiavelli rallied from last in a field of six to win the one-mile Pike Place Dancer on the turf by a half-length over Alasharchy, with a final time of 1:39.42.

“She broke in a little bit at the start, so we kind of spotted them a little more than I would have liked, but it gave me a chance to get to know her,” said winning rider David Carr. “She never got rank on me and was really relaxed. We got an inside trip and it opened up when we needed it to open. She’s got a lot of fight in her.”

Miss Machiavelli collected her second win in four career starts. Trained by Keith Desormeaux and owned by Big Chief Racing, LLC, Miss Machiavelli earned $60,000 for the victory to up her lifetime total to $108,500.

The bay filly was bred in Kentucky by Shane Doyle and Penny McCarthy. She is out of Dontgetinmyway, whose 3-year-old colt Dorsett, a full brother to Miss Machiavelli, won this year's Mystic Lake Derby.
