Colonel John yearling brings $220,000 to top OBS Select Sale

Hip No 114, a colt from the first crop of Colonel John consigned by Beth Bayer, Agent, went for $220,000 to top the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2012 Selected Yearling sale on Aug. 21.

Bought by top 2-year-old trainer Wesley Ward, the bay colt is out of Bon Caro, by Bon Point (GB), and is a half brother to stakes winner Glitter City and graded stakes placed Wild Forest Cat. The family also includes six-time grades stakes winner and $1.3 million earner Jostle.

Colonel John, winner of the Grade 1 Travers S., Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, and Grade 3 Sham S., earned $1,779,012 in his career. He joined his sire Tiznow for stallion duties at WinStar Farm in 2010. He started his stud career in fine fashion in the sales ring – His first weanlings sold at Keeneland November, and he was the leading freshman sire by North American weanling average of $105,900.
