Delhomme scores at Belmont

WinStar Farm  and Twin Creeks Racing Stables’ could have a star in the making with their 2-year-old colt Delhomme, who broke his maiden in front-running style Oct. 13 at Belmont Park.

Named after former Carolina Panthers starting quarterback Jake Delhomme and trained by Todd Pletcher, the bay son of Dixie Union was second first time out going six furlongs at Saratoga in late August. Stretching out to a mile this time, Delhomme was sent straight to the front by Cornelio Velasquez. The 2-5 favorite maintained a two-length lead after six furlongs in 1:10.57, and had plenty left for the stretch run, holding off Long River by a length and a half at the wire. The final time was an excellent 1:35.52, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 94.

Todd Pletcher, as agent, WinStar and Twin Creeks bought the bay Pennsylvania-bred for $440,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida Sale in March. He is the second foal out of Art Show, winner of the Salem County S. at the Meadowlands.
