Distorted Humor filly captures first stakes win

Two-year-old Lucky Folie took full advantage of her early speed to win Sunday’s $100,000 Desi Arnaz S. to give the daughter of Distorted Humor her first stakes win and second in three lifetime starts.

The Wertheimer and Frere homebred is Distorted Humor’s ninth stakes winner, and 21st black type horse overall, of the year, while his progeny earnings are nearing the $6.8 mark for 2015.

Lucky Folie, who was second in the one-mile Surfer Girl S. over the Santa Anita turf course a month ago, used her early turn of foot once again in Sunday’s seven furlong contest. Up by as much as about five lengths half way through the race, the chestnut filly had enough in reserve to hold off a pair of challengers in deep stretch, winning by a half-length in 1:23.86.

“I didn’t think she’d be that quick (early) coming out of a (route) race,” said winning trainer Richard Mandella. “She’s so quiet I didn’t think she’d be that aggressive but she sure was. And it turned out pretty good.”

With the win, Lucky Folie’s earnings now total $114,000.
