Distorted Humor Keeneland Jan. report

Ponche de Leona, in foal to Distorted Humor, was the highest-priced lot through the first three days of the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale, which runs Jan. 6-9.

The 15-year-old mare, the dam of 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Mucho Macho Man, sold for $775,000 to Eaton Sales’s Reiley McDonald on behalf of Betty Moran’s Brushwood Stables during the second session of the sale.

“The mare gets great foals,” McDonald said. “She’s the dam of a Breeders’ Cup winner and there are not many like her in the sale. We stretched a little to get her but who knows what the foal’s worth.”

Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services LLC, agent, consigned Ponche de Leona, who also has produced stakes-placed Mucho Mans Gold.

“I’m very thrilled that she sold and thankful to McDonald for his purchase, and to (owner) Black Rock (Stables) for letting us sell the mare,” partner Ron Blake said. “She’s a lovely mare and they (Brushwood) will do well with her. We were excited; we thought it was a fair price.”

Mucho Macho Man is a finalist for a 2013 Eclipse Awards for Horse of the Year and Champion Older Horse.
