Even $1 million for Pioneerof the Nile colt at F-T Florida

A colt by last year’s leading Third-Crop sire Pioneerof the Nile brought a winning bid of $1 million at Wednesday’s Fasig-Tipton Florida Sale, one of only four offerings to reach the seven-figure mark.

The 2-year-old colt, cataloged as hip No. 94 and consigned by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds, agent, was purchased by Jamie McCalmont on behalf of M. V. Magnier.

“He was as a nice a colt as there is in the sale,” said McCalmont. “He looked pretty good out there (in the ring), didn’t he? American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile’s 2015 Horse of the Year and Triple Crown champion) has got such an amazing book of mares and if this one is half as good as him, we’ll be alright. He will definitely stay in America.”

The dark bay colt worked in :10 1/5 at the Feb. 29 under tack show and comes from the illustrious family of champion La Chaposa (PER) and Grade 1 winners Chaposa Springs as well as You and I.
