G1 winner We Miss Artie punches KY Derby ticket with Spiral S. (G3) triumph

We Miss Artie, Artie Schiller’s winner of the Breeders’ Futurity S. (G1) at Keeneland last year at two, stamped his ticket into this year’s Kentucky Derby with a determined rally to win the $550,000 Spiral S. (G3) VIDEO March 22 at Turfway.

Trained by Todd Pletcher for Ken & Sarah Ramsey, We Miss Artie dug in late to get his nose in front at the wire of the 1 1/8-mile race, setting him up for a possible return to Keeneland as one of the favorites in next month’s Blue Grass S. (G1). Regardless if he runs in the Blue Grass or not, We Miss Artie’s 50 points earned from his Spiral victory gives him 60 points total, which is currently tops among all 3-year-olds in the Kentucky Derby standings and all but assures him a spot into the gate at Churchill Downs on May 3rd.

“It’s good to be on the way back to the Derby,” Ken Ramsey said. “One of these days I’m gonna win that thing.”

Ridden by John Velazquez, We Miss Artie raised his earnings to $609,000 with his third win from eight starts to date. The dark bay 3-year-old colt also broke his maiden last year at two at Saratoga. He was bred in Ontario by Richard Lister and purchased by Ramsey for $90,000 at the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale.
