Willcox Inn got his third stakes win of 2011 in the $200,000 Hawthorne Derby (G3), dominating the 1 1/8 mile turf race by 4 1/2-lengths. The 3-year-old son of Harlan's Holiday also has added money wins in the Grade 2 American Derby on July 9, when he set a stakes record at Arlington Park, and the $100,000 Arlington Classic in May.
Harlan's Holiday has 10 stakes winners in 2011, with 15 added money victories among them. Wilcox Inn is his leading North American earner.
Willcox Inn broke from the rail and was in midpack for the first half of the trip. He moved up along the rail on the final turn, then was sent between horses by Robby Albarado to assume command at the top of the stretch. He completed the distance in 1:48.97 over firm going.
“That was a serious race he ran today,” said Albarado.
The winner's share for winning the Hawthorne Derby, $120,000, boosted Willcox Inn's total earnings to $480,943. He owns a 4-1-2 career mark in nine starts for owner All In Stable. He is trained by Michael Stidham.
Stidham said Willcox Inn could be pointed to the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby on Nov. 27.
Willcox Inn is out of De Aar, who placed in six stakes in her career. Her siblings include millionaires Dynaforce and Cetewayo, who both won graded stakes at Arlington Park, as well as Grade 2 winner Bowman Mill.
