Gemologist chalks up to Friday maiden winners

Gemologist, currently the #2 sire on the 2016 Freshman Sire list, added a pair of winners to his first crop of runners on Oct. 21 when Gorrito and Lil Miss Sapphire both earned their initial victories.

Gorrito, a first-time starter, was a two-length winner going one mile and 70 yards at Hawthorne Race Course. The bay colt was bred in Kentucky by SF Bloodstock and is out of the multiple Grade 3-winning mare I Lost My Choo. Gorrito is owned by his trainer Michael Reavis, in partnership with Greco Racing Stable and MT of Lemont LLC.

Lil Miss Sapphire was a dominant 6 1/4-length winner in a six furlong affair at Santa Anita Park. After getting token pressure early, the bay filly drew away with ease to cover the distance in 1:11.77.

Lil Miss Sapphire is the latest of eight winners out of her dam Trickle Down. She was bred in Kentucky by Meritage LLC and Angelo Ferro and is owned by Bloom Racing Stable LLC and Barry Ostrager.
