Gemologist has OBS 2YO sale-topper at $550,000

First-Crop sire Gemologist set the high-water mark during Day 2 of the OBS Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in Training with a $550,000 colt secured by winning bidders David Ingordo and Peter Eurton’s L.E.B.

Consigned by Becky Thomas’ Sequel Bloodstock and cataloged as hip No. 564, the colt’s :10 second-flat breeze during the Under Tack Show last week caught the attention of potential buyers.

“The Gemologists have been very impressive looking and he’s got a good pedigree,” said Ingordo. “He had a standout breeze. We have very high hopes for him.”

The gray juvenile is out of the excellent broodmare Bon Caro, who has produced two stakes winners and the stakes-placed Wild Forest Cat, dam of current top 3-year-old Toews On Ice.

“He belongs to a client, Global Thoroughbreds,” said Thomas after the sale. “They bought him as a weanling and we just prepared him for them. “He’s been great. He’s really a two-turn horse that has so much class and quality that he can carry his speed. He’s a Classic type horse. He’s a special one.”

Gemologist has been one of the star freshman sires of the 2016 2-year-old auctions, with a sales average of $179,285 to date, fourth-best among first-crop sires.
