Gemologist leading freshman sire at OBS April sale

Through three days of the OBS April 19-22 Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in Training, WinStar Farm’s Gemologist had the best sales average among all freshman sires represented, at $180,909. Perhaps as impressive is that 11 of the 12 lots through the ring were sold, for a gross of $1.99 million.

Thursday’s results were particularly strong and included a $335,000 colt and $300,000 filly, both of whom breezed :10 seconds flat in last week’s Under Tack Show.

The colt, hip No. 857, was consigned by Mayberry Farm, agent, and went to China Horse Club International, Inc. The bay colt is out of Gem Sleuth and comes from the same family as WinStar stallion Artie Schiller.

The filly, hip No. 645, was consigned by Niall Brennan, agent and sold to Klaravich Stables, Inc. Bred in Kentucky, the bay juvenile is out of Collect the Fee, who is a half-sister to graded stakes winner Archbishop.

Gemologist ranks fourth on the 2016 Freshman Sire 2-year-old sales average list, with a figure of $181,578 year-to-date. He has three lots remaining in tomorrow’s final day at OBS.
