Gemologist stays hot, weanling goes for $260,000

Gemologist is enjoying a sensational year with his first crop of 2-year-olds on the track, and on Day 1 at Keeneland November his popularity showed with a weanling colt selling for $260,000 to Cavalier Bloodstock.

The handsome gray weanling, ringed as Hip 199, is out of the Grade 2-winning mare Frolic’s Dream, whose 2-year-old filly of 2016 is the undefeated Astoria S. winner Bode’s Dream.

Gemologist currently ranks No. 2 on the First-Crop Sires List, with $822,408 in progeny earnings to date. His four blacktype horses, two blacktype winners, and two Graded stakes winners ties for the most in his sire crop, and he’s one of three freshmen to sire a Grade 1-winning 2-year-old.

His debutante Yellow Agate captured last month’s Frizette S. (G1) at Belmont, and Gemologist is also the sire of Belmont’s promising Futurity S. (G3) winner Theory, who became a TDN Rising Star following his impressive debut win at Saratoga. Gemologist has sired a dozen winners to date.
