KTOBA honors dam of Take Charge Indy

Take Charge Lady, the dam of first-year WinStar Farm stallion Take Charge Indy, as well as 2013 champion 3-year-old colt Will Take Charge, was honored as 2013 Broodmare of the Year by the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (KTOBA) at its annual awards luncheon April 17.

Take Charge Indy, who is standing his first year for $20,000 stands and nurses, scored his biggest win in the 2012 Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park, where he defeated eventual Belmont S. (G1) winner Union Rags. In 2013, he won Churchill Downs’ Alysheba S. (G2) by six lengths with the best Beyer Speed Figure (109) of the year at 8 1/2 furlongs.  He retired early last fall to WinStar with $1.1 million in earnings.

Take Charge Lady was one of the top race mares in the country in 2002-03. She was an eight-time graded stakes winner, with three Grade 1 victories and earnings of nearly $2.5 million.
