Australian Group 1 winner Laser Hawk (Aus) scored a smart 1 ¾-length victory in a 1,200-meter trial race on Jan. 17 at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, and is being pointed to the prestigious Group 1 Doncaster Handicap, commonly known as the Doncaster Mile, over 1,600 meters on April 20 at Randwick.
Just 13 days prior, Laser Hawk was a good runner-up in a trial race in his season debut, and now looks set for a big Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, as he has become a top early choice in the local betting for the Doncaster Mile.
“He really attacked the line, he’s got so many gears that horse,” said jockey Tommy Berry, who added that he only pushed Laser Hawk out late in the trial win. “I asked him to do a bit late but he’s pretty laid back.”
By Artie Schiller, the 4-year-old Laser Hawk won the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas last year over 2000 meters, defeating subsequent Cox Plate winner Ocean Park, and finished third in the Group 1 Australian Derby over 2400 meters. His record stands at 4-0-2 from six starts with earnings of $591,569.
