Mendip gets back-to-back wins in G2 Maktoum Challenge
Friday, February 10, 2012
Mendip came from the back of the pack to score an authoritative 1 1/2-length victory in the $250,000, Group 2 Al Maktoum Challenge Feb. 9 at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. The 5-year-old son of Harlan's Holiday has raced in Dubai for the past three years following his maiden debut win in Great Britain.

The dark bay settled in the rear of the 11 horse field before making a bid three furlongs from the wire. Going somewhat wide into the long homestretch, Mendip took the lead with about 3/16ths of a mile to go and went to score with something left in reserve. The final time for the 1 3/16-mile contest on the Tapeta surface was 1:56.42.

"He is a nice horse whose form on (the all-weather) is very good and this was a big effort this evening", said winning rider Kieren Fallon

Mendip, owned by Shiekh Hamdan al Maktoum and trained by Saeed bin Suroor, is now 6-0-1 in nine starts. He has victories in last year's Group 3 Al Maktoum Challenge (Round 1) and Group 3 Burj Nahaar S.

Bred in Kentucky by Jayeff B Stable, Mendip sold for $375,000 at the 2009 Fasig-Tipton February Select 2-year-olds in training sale. He comes from the same family that includes Met Mile (G1) winner You and I and the ultra-talented mare Chaposa Springs, who won a dozen stakes, including six graded events, in her career.
