More Than Ready filly breaks through in Surfer Girl S.

Graded stakes performer Miss Southern Miss was much the best in the $100,000 Surfer Girl S. Oct. 10 at Santa Anita Park on a special Columbus Day card.

The 2-year-old More Than Ready filly placed in both the Sorrento S. (G2) and Landaluce S. this summer. Making her first start on the grass and around two turns, Miss Southern Miss uncorked a huge rally in the last three furlongs, swooping around the entire field with an electrifying move, then was hand-ridden to the wire to win by three lengths in 1:35.08 for the mile on the firm turf (VIDEO).

“According to her pedigree, she’s supposed to run like this,” said winning trainer Keith Desormeaux, who added that Miss Southern Miss will likely make her next start in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf  (G1) Nov. 4. “I tell you what, since the two year old crop came in there’s never been a doubt as to who is number one in the barn. So yeah, we expected it.”

Miss Southern Miss is owned by her breeder Peter Cantrell and is out of Miss Atlantic City, a three-time stakes winner of nearly $300,000.

Should she take the Juvenile Fillies Turf, Miss Southern Miss would be More Than Ready’s fourth Breeders’ Cup winner. His first came in the same race, with More Than Real in 2010.

Miss Southern Miss is now 2-2-0 in five starts and has earned $164,600.
