Pioneerof the Nile’s Midnight Storm seeks to end career in style

Midnight Storm has raced at the highest levels  over the past three years, and a win in Saturday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) would cap a spectacular career for the 6-year-old, who will be retired to stud following this weekend’s race.

One of the most versatile horses in recent memory, Midnight Storm has won seven graded stakes, on both turf and dirt. The Mile, which he finished third in last year, will represent his 19th straight graded stakes start.

As always, the Mile is one of the most competitive Breeders’ Cup races, and this year is no exception. It drew a field of 14, with Midnight Storm getting post 1, which will almost certainly force the Phil D’Amato trainee to use his natural speed right from the start.

A win by Midnight Storm would give Pioneerof the Nile a Breeders’ Cup winner for the third straight year, following Classic Empire in the Juvenile (G1) in 2016, and of course the eventual Horse of the Year American Pharoah in the Classic (G1) in 2015. Both colts were also champion 2-year-old males of their respective seasons.
