Shore Runner comes out on top in $100K Lucky Coin S.

Many of More Than Ready’s offspring have found a home on the turf, and Shore Runner looks like that type following his gutsy victory in the $100,000 Lucky Coin S. Monday at Saratoga.

The win was the third straight sprinting on the lawn for the 5-year-old, who has now earned $302,340 and has finished first or second in 12 of his 16 lifetime starts.

The Lucky Coin outcome was severely in doubt until the very last stride. Breaking from the rail, Shore Runner was away somewhat awkward and was seventh after a quarter mile in :21.88. Trapped on the fence coming into the stretch, the Kentucky-bred had to overcome not one, but two separate issues that caused him to alter course dramatically.

Finally in the clear with less than a sixteenth to run, Shore Runner roared past the field to win by a nose in 1:01 flat for the 5 ½ furlongs, just a second off the track record.

“It was a tough trip,” said trainer Joe Sharp. “I had all the confidence in the world with (jockey) Kendrick (Carmouche). He gave him a great ride from the one hole–nobody wants to be on the inside on the grass. Kendrick made the best out of a bad situation and was the right man for the job.”

Shore Runner is out of two-time stakes winner Miss Mary Pat and is a half-brother to stakes horses Captain Webb and Save Rock and Roll. He is owned by Brad Grady.

More Than Ready is now the sire of 152 lifetime stakes winners, including 15 this year.
