Speightsong dominates $150K Queenston S.
Saturday, May 17, 2014
Sam-Son Farm’s home-bred Speightsong zipped to a front-running victory in the $150,000 Queenston S. for 3-year-olds Saturday at Woodbine to become the fifth stakes winner of 2014 for his sire Speightstown.

The WinStar stallion has ascended to third on the 2014 General Sire list, with 20 stakes horses and $3.16 in progeny earnings.

Speightsong, out of the Sam-Son mare Song of the Lark, rolled through fractions of :23.21 and :45.89 while maintaining at least a one-length lead. The Imposter tried to cut the margin at the head of the stretch, but the eventual winner pulled away authoritatively to win by two and one-half lengths in 1:22.37 for the seven furlongs.

“I always thought this was a good little horse,” said winning trainer Malcom Pierce. “He just needed some lessons to learn. He was a two-year-old who always had excuses, I think, in his first three races. But he’s finally showing what we thought of him.”

“He’s a very relaxing horse,” echoed jockey Patrick Husbands. “The last time I rode him I was down on the inside. Today (from post six), he left sharp, I realized nobody wanted the lead so I let him do what he wanted to do. He won pretty easy.”

Speightsong is a half-brother to Up With the Birds, Canada’s top three-year-old last year, and second place finisher in the Queen’s Plate (G1).

The Queenston is considered a prep for the $1 million Queen’s Plate, to be run this year on Sunday, July 6.
