Speightstown filly rings up $440K at OBS 2YO sale

Perennial top-10 sire Speightstown’s Day 2 offerings at the OBS Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in Training included a $440,000 filly to leading trainer Linda Rice. The filly is the top-priced lot of her sex and third-highest overall through the first two days of the auction.

Consigned by Wavertree Stables Inc. and cataloged as hip No. 469, the filly had breezed a rapid :10 seconds flat during the Under Tack Show last week. The gray juvenile is a half-sister to Santa Ynez S. (G2) winner Alpha Kitten and is out of Marylebone’s (G1 Matron S.) half-sister Alpha Mama.

“She has a big, long stride on her,” Rice said. “She is young and she’s probably going to grow some more. I think Speightstown is a great stallion. She had a great workout and great presentation at the barn.”

Speightstown’s lifetime stats include 118 black type horses, $67 million in progeny earnings and 72 black type winners and has nine black type horses to date in 2016.
