Spring in the Air wins 2yo Sovereign Award

Spring at Last’s Grade 1 winning 2-year-old filly Spring in the Air was named the 2012 Canadian Sovereign Award winner in her division at the April 19 awards ceremony at Woodbine Racecourse.

Spring in the Air’s stablemate Spring Venture, also by Spring at Last, finished second in the voting to give the WinStar stallion a category “exacta” of sorts.

The two fillies helped propel Spring at Last to the second spot on the 2012 Freshman Sire List with $1.18 million in progeny earnings. The duo has gotten off to a good start in 2013 as well, with Spring Venture besting her stablemate in the $100,000 OBS Championship (Filly Division) S. on March 11.

Spring in the Air, who was bred by WinStar Farm, finished first or second in four of five outings last year, highlighted by a rousing victory in the Grade 1 Alcibiades S. at Keeneland. Owned by John Oxley and trained by Mark Casse, she was a $130,000 auction purchase at the 2012 OBS Select 2-year-olds sale.
