Tiz Miz Sue wins second straight running of the Grade 3 Azeri S.

Tiznow’s venerable mare Tiz Miz Sue defeated 2012 champion mare My Miss Aurelia by 1 1/4-lengths to win her second straight $150,000 Azeri S. (G3) Saturday at Oaklawn Park. The winner’s share of $90,000 put Tiznow over the $1 million mark in progeny earnings for 2013, putting him in the top 20 on the General Sire List.

In the Azeri, Songs and Sonnets came out with her mind on running, and was up 7 1/2-lengths after a half-mile in a pedestrian :49.07. Tiz Miz Sue, meanwhile, was rated in fourth until near the top of the stretch, when she swung wide, running down Don’t Tell Sophia, who had taken over from a fading Song and Sonnets inside the final furlong. The winning time was 1:45.26 for 1 1/16 miles.

“The Apple Blossom ((G1),also at Oaklawn on April 12) is a definite target now,” said trainer Steve Hobby. “She ran against some Grade 1 fillies today. I was really worried when they went 25 early, but she wasn’t that far back today. Joe (Rocco, Jr.) rode her really well today. He knows her.”

Tiz Miz Sue, a 6-year-old bred and owned by Cres Ran LLC, improved her record to 7-9-4 in 30 starts and has now earned $789,371.
