Tiznow colt gets elusive first stakes win

Chester and Mary Broman’s homebred Tiznow colt Can You Diggit had placed in four stakes in his career prior to Monday’s victory in the $100,000 Evan Shipman S. at Saratoga.

“This horse has been knocking on the door,” summed up winning trainer Jimmy Jerkens. “He certainly deserved a win.”

The Shipman drew a field of five going nine furlongs. Can You Diggit dropped off the pace, with Control Group and Wine Not side-by-side through six furlongs in 1:12.48. With three horses in front of him at the top of the stretch, Junior Alvarado was forced to go very wide for clear running.

Can You Diggit and Pat On the Back both were making up ground late, with Can You Diggit moving fastest of all to win by a neck in 1:49.93 on a fast track.

Can You Diggit upped his career stats to 4-6-3 in 19 starts and his bankroll to $373,555.

The winner is out of the four-time stakes winner Mineralogist, while his second dam Seeking the Ante won the Nassau County (G2) and his third dam was millionaire and three-time Grade 1 winner Antespend.

Can You Diggit is Tiznow’s third stakes winner this month and ninth overall in 2018. His progeny have now earned over $84 million and won or placed in more than 140 stakes races worldwide.
