Undefeated Gemologist gets post position 15 for Kentucky Derby 138

Gemologist will put his undefeated streak on the line when the WinStar Farm colorbearer breaks from post 15 in the $2 million Kentucky Derby (G1) on Saturday at Churchill Downs. He was installed the 6-1 third choice in the morning line by oddsmaker Mike Battaglia.

Already two-time winner over the Churchill Downs track, including last November in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club, the bay son of Tiznow will be ridden by Javier Castellano.

While Gemologist has natural speed, trainer Todd Pletcher sees his horse setting up just off the pace when he breaks from the first stall in the auxiliary gate.

“Perfect. It worked out perfect,” said Pletcher. “I love the 15, the first one in the auxiliary gate. There’s a little space there. He’s outside all the speed.”

Gemologist comes into the Derby off a victory in the Wood Memorial (G1), where he came from third place to earned a determined neck victory.

A win Saturday would be the second Derby for the WinStar/Pletcher combo, following their score two years ago with Super Saver, who now stands stud at the farm.

Post time for the Run for the Roses is 6:24 p.m. ET and will go as the 11th race.
