WinStar Super Saver homebred sparkles in Gulfstream MdSpWt

Hedge Fund, a 3-year-old Super Saver colt, kicked off 2017 with a rousing maiden special weight score Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

The colt, bred by WinStar Farm and owned in partnership with China Horse Club and SF Racing LLC, was making his first start around two turns following a six-furlong debut in December, also at Gulfstream.

Despite breaking from the outside in the field of nine, the chestnut came out running and secured a spot in second behind Divine Ami midway around the first turn. Hedge Fund kept the pressure on the leader for six furlongs, then assumed command with Javier Castellano looking back for the competition.

Hedge Fund powered away from his foes in the stretch, coming home a four-length winner in 1:44.95 for the 1 1/16-miles.

Out of the Distorted Humor mare Rosy Humor, Hedge fund is a half-brother to WinStar-bred Stanford, who has earned more than $1.2 million to date.

After finishing 2016 as the leading Cumulative Third-Crop Sire in several categories, Super Saver’s runners in the first month of 2017 included the stakes winner Star Super, as well as the stakes-placed duo of Big Hit and Inside Straight.
