Tiznow's Royal Son closes 2017 with huge effort in Prairie Bayou S. title=

Tiznow's Royal Son closes 2017 with huge effort in Prairie Bayou S.

Royal Son dominated the $50,000 Prairie Bayou S. Dec. 29 at Turfway Park, taking the lead at the top of the stretch and never looking back to win by 7-1/4 lengths. The 5-year-old son of Tiznow has been in great form of late; on Nov. 30 he set the track record for a mile over Turfway's Polytrack, 1:34.92. When the field was reduced to six from an original field of 14 due to adverse weather, Royal Son was sent off the 4-5 favorite. He stalked in third before making his bid, and drew away with authority to cover the 1 1/16-miles in 1:44.04, earning a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 106. “The scratches helped bring us closer to the rail, but I was pretty confident in how he would run anyway,” said winning trainer Kellyn Gorder. “He just loves this track. He looked so relaxed, and I was really happy to see that. He finished strong.” Also a winner of the 2015 John Battaglia Memorial S. in his first start at Turfway, Royal Son now has six wins, four seconds and two thirds from 22 starts and purse earnings of $321,605. Royal Son is out of the A. P. Indy mare Mama Nadine. He was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm LLC and is owned by Ali Goodrich’s Sweet Home Stables and Mark Parkinson. As 2017 draws to a close, champion sire Tiznow crossed another personal milestone recently when his lifetime progeny earnings surpassed the $80 million mark. He'll be standing the 2018 season at WinStar for $50,000 stands and nurses.
