All Squared Away’s big Lexington surprise

Bellamy Road’s All Squared Away pulled off the biggest upset of the 2012 Triple Crown trail with a 70-1 shocker in the Grade 3 Lexington S. at Keeneland. The $120,000 winner’s share made All Squared Away the leading earner of 2012 for his sire, who is in the top 15 on the third crop sire list

Always in a good position, All Squared Away was four wide, but never more than three lengths off the lead, through the first half of the 1 1/16-mile Polytrack contest. Julio Garcia spurred his mount at the leaders as the field hit the stretch, eventually rolling by on the outside in deep stretch to win by a length and a half.

“My idea was to go very close to the pace,” Garcia said. “I rode this horse in the morning, and I knew he was going to run a good race today.”

Peter Miller, in the name of Altamire Racing Stable, is a co-owner All Squared Away along with Bob Rodriguez’s Wire to Wire Racing. Miller was the trainer of record until the Lexington.

“The horse had a tough trip in the race (G2 Vinery Spiral S. on March 24) at Turfway, and after the race he (Miller) just asked me if I would take him to train and he gave him to me. And I’ll tell you what, the horse has just been doing fantastic ever since,” said winning trainer Wesley Ward. “Every day that goes by the horse just keeps getting better here. As most horses do when they come to Keeneland, it’s such a tranquil, peaceful setting. Horses just thrive and this guy’s one of them.”

All Squared Away, bred in Kentucky by Gracefield Breeders, is out of the unraced Posse mare Squared. The victory improved All Squared Away’s bankroll to $164,180 with a record of 9-2-2-2.
