Big rally carries Passion for Action to Jacques Cartier win

Speightstown’s Passion for Action last-to-first rally carried the 4-year-old to his second career stakes win in Saturday’s $125,000 Jacques Cartier S. at Woodbine.

Speightstown, a perennial top-10 sire, has five stakes winners and 10 black-type horses in 2016.

Trailing the field of six sprinters for the first half-mile, Passion for Action unleashed a five-wide rally a quarter-mile from the finish, rolling by the field to win going away by 2 1/4-lengths.

The final time over the new Tapeta surface was a very quick 1:09.75.

“He broke well and positioned himself comfortably. I was very confident in him, because I work this horse in the morning and he was giving me a very good feeling,” said  winning rider Eurico da Silva. “I came with a lot of confidence. He was traveling last, but only three lengths behind. When I asked him, I put him outside in the clear and he just took off from there.”

“I love the track. I love the horse. I love him on the turf and anywhere from six furlongs to a mile. Maybe that’s what we’re shooting for, the (Grade 1) Woodbine Mile,” said an overjoyed owner Ben Hutzel, who also bred the colt.

Passion for Action earned $90,000 in victory while improving his record to 4-3-1 from 13 starts. His previous stakes win came in the $250,000 Cup and Saucer S. as a 2-year-old.
