Colonel John scored his third winner from five starters on Thursday as Sweetsoutherndame pulled clear in the stretch en route to an easy 5 3/4-length win at Presque Isle Downs.
Colonel John’s three winners is tops among all first-crop sires and he is also ranked third in Kentucky by progeny earnings.
Bred and owned (in partnership with Blazing Meadows Farm) by WinStar Farm, Sweetsoutherndame made short work of her nine 2-year-old filly foes with swift move from fourth to first coming into the stretch to prove easily best.
Sweetsoutherndame is the first foal out of the unraced Southern Image mare Southbound, who is a half-sister to 2008 Iowa Derby winner Tiz Now Tiz Then.
