Colonel John tops all sires on Free ‘Cap

With two colts and three fillies listed from his first crop, WinStar stallion Colonel John tied for the top spot with number of horses on The Jockey Club’s 2013 Experimental Free Handicap, released Jan. 29 by The Jockey Club.

The Free Handicap, published annually since 1935, is a weight-based assessment of the previous year’s leading 2-year-olds.

Winner of the $100,000 OBS Championship on Jan 21, Here’s Johnny earned his spot on the colt list with solid performances throughout 2013, finishing second in both the $117,000 Kentucky Downs Juvenile in September and the $100,000 Juvenile Turf S. at Gulfstream Park in November.

Colonel John’s top filly is Colonel Joan, weighted at 116 pounds, seven from the top spot. Colonel Joan racked up earnings of $127,250, placing in both the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) and Surfer Girl S. at Santa Anita.
