Competitive Edge comes back big in the Tamarac S.

Living up to his billing, Competitive Edge rolled to an 8 ¼-length win in the $60,000 Tamarac S. Friday at Gulfstream Park, the first start for the 3-year-old son of Super Saver since his dominating win in the Sept. 1 Hopeful S. (G1) at Saratoga.

Super Saver finished 2014 ranked second on the First Crop Sire list and is in the Top 10 once again this year on the Second Crop list.

With John Velazquez in the irons, Competitive Edge broke alertly and went to the front, with fellow TDN Rising Star Mr. Jordan pressing strongly to his inside. Competitive Edge made his way to the rail after a quarter mile in :22.90. Mr. Jordan tried to keep up around the turn, but Competitive Edge was too much, pulling clear at the head of the stretch and coasting home an easy winner.

The final time for the seven furlongs on a fast track was 1:24.90.

“As a two-year-old, he used to be a little rank, now he’s more laid back,” said Velazquez on TVG after the race. “He waited for me to ask him to run (today). It was a very good race for him.”

Competitive Edge was bred by WinStar Farm and is the first foal out of the Cape Town mare Magdalena’s Chase. He sold for $750,000 at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton Florida March Select Sale, the highest price paid for a juvenile by a first crop sire at the sale.
