Competitive Edge rolls to victory in Grade 3 Pat Day Mile

Top-10 Second Crop sire Super Saver’s Competitive Edge scored an easy victory in the $200,000 Pat Day Mile (G3) on Derby Day at Churchill Downs. The victory in the renamed Derby Trial comes five years after his sire won the 2010 Kentucky Derby (G1).

Competitive Edge, who is undefeated in four starts, won the Hopeful S. (G1) last year and returned to the races in 2015 with a blowout win in the Tamarac S. Mar. 27 at Gulfstream Park.

The one-turn Pat Day set up perfectly for Competitive Edge, who stalked the pace set by Hillbilly Royalty, then took over at the top of the stretch and rolled home a four-length winner in 1:34.18.

Competitive Edge was tagged a TDN Rising Star following his flashy debut victory at Saratoga by some ten lengths. After Saturday’s win, he has now earned $421,000 for owners Nancy Favreau, Kathy Psoinos LLC and Michael Tabor. The 3-year-old colt is trained by Todd Pletcher.

The winner was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, home of Super Saver. The bay colt is the first foal out of the multiple stakes-placed mare Magdalena’s Chase and comes from the same family as Blue Grass S. (G1) winner Wild Syn.
