Constitution’s Tiz the Law the top choice in Kentucky Derby 146

Despite drawing post 17 in the 18-horse field for Saturday’s $3 million Kentucky Derby (G1), Constitution’s brilliant colt Tiz the Law was installed as the 3-5 favorite on the morning line when post positions were drawn on Tuesday.

Tiz the Law’s morning line reflects his dominant performances this year. Undefeated in four starts, the bay colt won the Belmont S., Travers S. and Florida Derby, all Grade 1 events, and kicked off 2020 with a win in the Holy Bull S. (G3). His average winning margin has been just over four length.

Tiz the Law visited the Churchill Downs track for the first time Wednesday morning after shipping from New York on Tuesday.

“There was a lot of tension at the table as the numbers drew down,” said Jack Knowlton, head of Sackatoga Stable, which owns Tiz the Law. “It was down to the two or 17 and I think the 17 is a great spot.”

With his win in the Travers on Aug. 8, Tiz the Law upped his earnings to $2,015,300, easily the most in the Derby field. He’ll be ridden by regular rider Manny Franco on Saturday.

Tiz the Law sold to his owners for $110,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton New York Preferred Yearlings sale. He was bred by Twin Creeks Farm and is out of the Grade 2-winning mare Tizfiz.

Post time for Saturday’s Derby, race 14, is 7:01 p.m. ET and will be televised nationally on NBC.
