Distorted Humor colt debuts with 114 Beyer

In the lightning-quick 1:07.44 it took Maclean’s Music to win his 6 ½ furlong debut, the 3-year-old son Distorted Humor wrote himself into the record books with a 114 Beyer Speed Figure. The number is the highest ever recorded for a first time starter. (WATCH VIDEO)

Maclean’s Music made the lead in the first hundred yards under Mike Smith, cruised around the turn without pressure, then powered away from the field to win by 7 1/4-lengths with Smith easing him up in the final sixteenth.

“I think he deserves and will get all of our attention and respect,” trainer Steve Asmussen told The Thoroughbred Times. “We’ll wait until he goes back to the track and will work him under the right conditions. There’s a lot to be protected there. We’re very excited and we want to manage him carefully because I don’t even think special is a good enough description of him.”

Owned and bred by Stonestreet Stables LLC, Maclean’s Music was a $900,000 RNA at the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale. The bay colt is the first foal out of Forest Music, who Asmussen trained to win the 2005 Honorable Miss Handicap (G2), one of her five stakes victories.
