Drosselmeyer has the Look of Good One

WinStar Farm looks very strong at the moment going into the Triple Crown events of 2010 with the likes of accomplished stakes winners Super Saver (Kentucky Jockey Club), Rule (Delta Jackpot) and American Lion (Hollywood Prevue).

It is fair to say that Drosselmeyer (Distorted Humor-Golden Ballet) has been a bit slower to come around. With a third and a pair of second place finishes after three starts, Drosselmeyer was entered in a 1-mile maiden race on Churchill’s main track on Nov. 18.

Breaking from the extreme outside in a 9-runner field, the son of Distorted Humor circled up to make the lead with a four-wide move in the turn and then continued to extend that lead coming home 6-lengths to the good. The final time of 1:37 for the one-turn mile was a deceptively good clocking over a tiring, drying out Churchill surface and both the Beyer (87) and Ragozin (6) numbers substantiated that fact.

Suddenly Drosselmeyer’s form looks considerably better than useful. This colt has now run competitively on both turf and synthetic in addition to his dominating win on dirt. He has a tremendous foundation of three 2-turn routes plus a one-turn mile from which to draw on in next year’s classics. In Distorted Humor, he is by a stallion that consistently churns out high-class, Grade 1 performers out of a dam that accounted for the Santa Anita Oaks (Gr.1), Las Virgenes (Gr.1), Santa Ynez (Gr.2) and Railbird Stakes (Gr.2) all as a three year-old. To simply say this colt has the pedigree to train on at three would be a gross understatement. This colt’s pedigree screams three year-old!

In case this muscular, long-striding colt hasn’t already got enough going for him, he will be cultivated, molded and pampered over the winter months by a fellow who knows a thing or two about late-developing colts-trainer Bill Mott.
That first Saturday in May has a way of creeping up rather quickly on some talented, unsuspecting colts, but at least at this stage, Drosselmeyer seems well equipped to handle much of what will be thrown his way in the months ahead.
