Huntertown first winner for WinStar Farm’s Good Samaritan
Wednesday, May 11, 2022

Huntertown made a flashy career debut on Wednesday, May 11, cruising to a 6 ¾-length maiden special weight victory at Horseshoe Indianapolis, becoming the first starter and first winner for WinStar Farm stallion Good Samaritan.

Ridden by Edgar Morales, Huntertown attended the early pace from third and swept to the front while in hand around the far turn of the 4 ½-furlong event. Without ever being asked, the chestnut colt coasted to the wire unchallenged and won geared down. Bred in Kentucky by Derby Lane Farm and owned by Roger McDaniel, Huntertown is trained by Rey Hernandez. The colt, who is out of the winning Proud Citizen mare Charlene’s Pal, signaled his readiness for his unveiling with a pair of bullet works, including a brisk three-furlong move in :34.80 on April 16.

Good Samaritan, a versatile millionaire son of Harlan’s Holiday and a Grade 2 winner at two, three, and four, was a 4 ¾-length winner of the $600,000 Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) in his first start on the dirt when he defeated winners of both the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness S. (G1). Good Samaritan won the Summer Stakes (G2) at two on the turf and captured the $400,000 New Orleans Handicap (G2) in his 4-year-old bow with a rousing last-to-first stretch run.

All told, Good Samaritan won or placed in eight Graded stakes during his racing career, making 14 consecutive Graded stakes starts from 15 lifetime outings, earning $1,309,450. He defeated a total of 10 Grade 1 winners—six on dirt and four on turf—and was just shy of being a Grade 1 winner, finishing second by a half-length in the 2017 Clark Handicap (G1) at Churchill Downs.

A homebred for WinStar Farm, Good Samaritan is out of the stakes-placed Pulpit mare Pull Dancer. This deep family, which traces back to blue hen mare La Troienne, includes stallions Sky Mesa and Bernstein, as well as Champion 2-Year-Old Filly Outstandingly.

Good Samaritan saw first yearlings in 2021 sell for up to $310,000 and his first 2-year-olds at OBS March were paced by a $300,000 colt. For more information about Good Samaritan, who stands for $7,500 S&N, contact Liam O’Rourke, Olivia Desch, or Gareth Wigley at 859-873-1717
