Solid debut win for Drosselmeyer filly at Churchill Downs

Rilla repelled several challenges to her front-running effort Sunday at Churchill Downs, prevailing by three-quarters of a length in a six-furlong maiden special weight contest for 2-year-old fillies.

She is Drosselmeyer’s fourth winner from his first crop to race, three of them coming in maiden special weights, including Copper Cajun, who would follow up his win with a close second in the $75,000 Evangeline Downs Star S.

Both Runner Girl and Banner Waving took their shots at Rilla, with neither of them able to get within a half-length of the winner, who finished the six furlongs in 1:11.04 on a fast main track.

Rilla was bred by WinStar Farm in partnership with Dr. Charles Huber. She is the first foal out of Humble Song, who is a sister to Jaipur H. (G3) winner Around the Cape. The filly was a $90,000 purchase at the OBS Horses of Racing Age this past June.
