Speightstown filly captures her stakes debut in $100,000 Ruling Angel S.

Making just her third career start, Sam-Son Farms’ homebred 3-year-old filly Southern Ring rallied to a two-length score in the $100,000 Ruling Angel S. over Woodbine’s Polytrack.

The daughter of Speightstown, who broke her maiden by 5 ¾-lengths a month ago on the turf, was just effective on the main track. Breaking very quickly, Southern Ring let conceded the lead to a headstrong Green Doctor.

The fast early pace took its toll on the leader in upper stretch, and Southern Ring asserted herself in the final furlong to wrap up the six furlongs in 1:16.10.

“Today, we had a horse to aim (at) and she did a great job,” said winning rider Eurico Da Silva of his filly’s trip.  “She was very, very relaxed behind.   I was very pleased with the way she ran today.   She’s a very nice horse.  I liked this filly from the beginning, the first time I worked her.”

Southern Ring, out of the multiple stakes winner Seeking the Ring, is 2-1-0 in three starts and has picked up $96,508. She is the 13th stakes winner of 2015 for Speightstown, who ranks 5th nationally on the General Sire list with $8.8 million in progeny earnings.
