Speightstown rings up $900,000 filly Tuesday at Keeneland sale

Perennial leading sire Speightstown was off to a hot start early during Tuesday’s session of the Keeneland September Yearling sale when hip No. 235 brought a winning bid of $900,000.

Consigned by Glennwood Farm Inc., agent for breeders John and Tanya Gunther, the dark bay filly went to the team of  WinStar’s Maverick Racing and Siena Farm.

“She is just a beautiful filly,” said WinStar’s David Hanley. “We thought she was the best filly we had seen in the sale. We love the pedigree.”

“It was fantastic,” Jon Gunther said of the filly’s big price tag. “She sold well above her reserve. She got a lot of action at the barn. Of all our Book 1 yearlings, she was the most active. A lot of people came back to look at her several times. We are very excited about the price.”

The filly is the first foal out of Wildwood Rose, a daughter of Galileo. Her dam Wildwood Flower has produced the likes of Florida Derby (G1) winner Materiality and Gazelle S. (G2) winner My Miss Sophia.

Speightstown, currently third on the 2021 General Sire list with $11.1 million in earnings, concluded Keeneland’s Book 1 sale with an average price of $490,000 from six lots sold.
