Spring at Last tops juvy sire winners list

With four winners already from his first crop, WinStar Farm’s freshman sire Spring at Last is tied for the top spot on the 2012 Freshman Sire list. He also ranks sixth among the group in terms of progeny earnings.

Spring at Last’s latest winner came on July 4th, when Just Gone won a 5 1/2-length maiden special weight contest by a widening two lengths. The dark bay or brown Kentucky bred was purchased by his owner, Esquire Stables, at the 2011 OBS August yearling sale. He is out of Scarlettotara, an unraced sister to the multiple graded stakes winner Posse.

In addition to his early runners’ success, Spring at Last has been a hit in the auction ring as well. He is the sire of the all-time record-priced OBS June filly, who sold for $320,000, and his 2012 juveniles in training have averaged $76,125, more than 10 times the current stud fee of $7,500.
