Super Saver filly game in first stakes win

Star Super, who was multiple stakes-placed last year as a 2-year-old, came away with her first added-money win on Saturday with a gutsy neck victory in the $75,000 Marshua S. at Laurel Park.

Star Super is Super Saver’s first stakes winner of 2017. The WinStar stallion wrapped up 2016 as the leading Cumulative Third-Crop Sire in several categories and already has three stakes horses this year.

A clean break put Star Super in third, a couple lengths from the front, for the backstretch run.  The dark bay began to make her move towards the leaders on the turn, and came into the stretch on top. Lucky in Malibu gave a stern challenge in the final furlong, but Star Super would not be denied. She completed the six furlongs in 1:11.30.

“I was confident coming into the race. I was a lot more confident this morning than I was at the sixteenth pole, but that’s her. She does like to fight and she was playing a little bit with the field but she’s a very talented filly,” winning trainer Cathal Lynch said. “[Lucky in Malibu] is a very nice filly. In the paddock she was the one I was afraid of. This is a very exciting filly.”

Star Super upped her record to 2-2-1 in seven starts with earnings of $128,200 for owner Equine Prep. She was bred in Kentucky by Rocco Baldelli, Caldara Farm and Lane’s End Bloodstock.
