Tiz a Slam goes all the way in Dominion Day S. (G3)

Tiz a Slam, winner of last year’s Ontario Derby (G3), added a second graded stakes to his resume on July 1 when the 4-year-old by Tiznow took the Dominion Day (G3) at Woodbine.

Third in the Fair Grounds H. (G3) earlier this year, the Chiefswood Stable homebred upped his overall mark to 5-2-1 from 17 outings, with earnings of $560,142.

Tiz a Slam is Tiznow’s sixth stakes winner this year and one of his more than 40 lifetime graded stakes winners.

With no one seeking the lead, Tiz a Slam went to the front and controlled the pace the rest of the way. Up nearly two lengths after a half-mile in a tepid :50.84, the bay colt continued to hold sway as the field pursued him. Melmich mounted a serious challenge at the top of the stretch, and may have gotten his head in front for a stride or two, but at the wire, Tiz a Slam was 1 1/4-lengths in front of his closest pursuer, with multiple graded winner Are You Kidding Me in third.

Canandian-bred Tiz a Slam is a son of Flaming Rose, whose half-sister Essential Edge Chiefswood also campaigned to wins in the Canadian S. (G2), as well as a pair of listed events.
