Undefeated Annex wins $100,000 Cutler Bay S. with driving finish

Constitution’s 3-year-old colt Annex won his second straight turf stakes Saturday at Gulfstream Park in thrilling style, winning a three-way photo over Fulmini by a neck with a well-timed ride by Junior Alvarado for trainer Bill Mott.

Winner of the Palm Beach S. (G3) in late February over this same track, Annex won his debut in January, again on the Gulfstream lawn, and is a perfect 3-for-3 and has earned $144,280.

Annex was in fourth and a few lengths from the front, while racing a few paths off the rail, for most of the one-mile trip. Alvarado took Annex four-wide into the stretch to set up the late dramatics. Fullmini was not backing down, but Annex caught him in the final 50 yards to snatch the victory.

The final time on the firm turf was 1:34.33.

“It’s always a special to race for Mr. (Bill) Mott. He lets you do what you think is right in a race,” said Alvarado. “Today, there wasn’t much pace on paper. He broke good. He put himself in a good spot and I wasn’t going to take anything away from him. After that, I just kept picking it up little by little. He’s still very green, which makes my job a little challenging, but he got it done.”

Annex is owned by LNJ Foxwoods and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and was bred in Kentucky by William Harrigan and Mike Pietrangelo. He is the third foal out of You Make Me Sing, whose half-sister You won more than $2 million and five Grade 1 races.

Constitution is the leading 2021 Third-Crop sire in several categories, including black type horses, graded stakes horses, winners and wins.
