Warrant wins $300,000 Texas Derby to become Constitution’s newest SW

Warrant stormed down the middle of the Lone Star Park stretch to win $300,000 Texas Derby over a stellar field by three-quarters of a length.

The 3-year-old, who was second in the May 1 Oaklawn S., is Constitution’s sixth stakes winner this year. The WinStar stallion leads the Third-Crop Sire list by stakes horses, graded stakes horses, winners, and wins.

Warrant, ridden by Joel Rosario, earned the victory despite being five or six wide the entire trip. He sat in mid-pack until about three furlongs to run, when he mounted his bid. Full of run in the final eighth-mile, he flew past the field to stop the timer in 1:45.03 on the sloppy racetrack.

Warrant is trained by Brad Cox for his owner/breeder Twin Creeks Racing Stables. Out of Whisper Number, Warrant is a half-brother to Ms Locust Point, winner of six stakes, including the Barbara Fritchie S. (G2).

Warrant is now 2-2-1 in five starts, all this year, and has earned $294,700.
