Weekend Hideaway too good in $200,000 Commentator S.

Weekend Hideaway, one of Speightstown’s most prolific stakes performers over the past few years, racked up his seventh added-money victory on Memorial Day with a flawless 3 3/4-length score in the $200,000 Commentator S. at Belmont Park.

After a very alert break, the 6-year-old was in front early, then got some pressure in mid-race from Sioux, but shook him off easily on the turn and glided through the stretch for an easy win. The final time for the mile over the muddy track was 1:35.95.

“I had one eye on (Weekend Hideaway) and one eye on Royal Posse,” trainer Phil Serpe said, referring to the runner-up, who was last much of the race. “Royal Posse wasn’t getting untracked; he was not making up any ground. When (jockey Gabriel Saez) turned into the stretch it was just try to get him home.”

Weekend Hideaway has now finished in the money in 18 of his 31 lifetime starts and amassed $751,532 in earnings for Red and Black Stable.

Weekend Hideaway is one of a dozen black type horses by Speightstown this year; the perennial top  -10 stallion has surpassed 70 stakes winners and $68 million in lifetime progeny earnings in 2016.
