Twinspired draws perfectly for KY Derby run

Twinspired, the aptly-named son of Harlan’s Holiday, will make his run at history in Kentucky Derby 137 (G1) from post position 10, right in the middle of the 20 horse field. The gray or roan colt will try to become the second straight Derby winner to have connections to WinStar, following last year’s victory by Super Saver, who was owned and bred by the Lexington farm.

The post position draw sat well with the normally reserved trainer Mike Maker. “We’re happy with the draw for both horses (he also trains the number 9, Derby Kitten) next to each other in the nine and 10. We were hoping to draw something around 10 and farther out, and pretty much we got that with both horses.”

Twinspired has been improving all winter while stabled in Kentucky. He won the listed WEBN S. and was third in the Spiral S. (G3), both at Turfway Park, before running too good to lose but just getting nosed out in the Toyota Blue Grass (G1) at Keeneland last month.

Twinspired is 2-1-1 in eight starts, with overall earnings of $264,830. He was a $140,000 purchase at the Fasig-Tipton 2-year-old sale last May, where he was bought by Maker for the partnership of Alpha Stables, Skychai Racing LLC and Sand Dollar Stable LLC.
