$1.3 million filly spearheads WinStar-Bred Book 1 success

WinStar Bred and Raised Yearlings made a strong showing through Book 1 of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, including a Gun Runner filly that sold for seven figures.

Consigned by Denali Stud, the bay filly was listed as Hip 105 on Day 1 of the sale and was acquired by Nick Sallusto/Thorostock for $1.3 million. She is out of the Freud mare Scribbling Sarah, and is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Speech and John Hancock — a WinStar-owned Constitution colt who won this year’s Sam F. Davis S. at Tampa Bay Downs in stakes-record time.

“It was hard to find something that we didn’t like [about the filly],” Sallusto said. “I was the underbidder on Speech as a 2-year-old, so I watched her career and then the dam came back with John Hancock last year and it looks like he still has a bright future ahead of him.”

On Day 2 of the sale, Repole Stable went to $400,000 for an Uncle Mo full-sister to dual Graded stakes-placed Classic Fit. The ELiTE Sales consigned filly is out of the Bernardini mare Donatella, whose dam True Style is a half-sister to the late influential sire Scat Daddy.

Other Book 1 WinStar-breds included a Justify filly out of the multiple stakes-winning Quality Road mare Top Quality, who was purchased by Mahmud Mouni for $375,000 from the Warrendale Sales consignment; and a Life Is Good filly out of the Curlin mare Blue Violet that went to Taproot Bloodstock for $300,000.
